Western red cedar is basically a form of softwood, which grows around British Columbia and some western states of the USA. Its a versatile timber and is commonly used for cladding, for windows, and joinery work. It's a very large tree and grows up to 230 ft. and above and mostly around 6m in circumference. It's mostly porus and has a similar color as red cedar. They also tend to live very long and in fact some of the trees have even been recorded to live as long as 1500 years as well.
Red Cedar wood is very valuable and used extensively in the western world. However of late the consumption has increased and leaving a gaping hole between demand and supply. There is an urgent need to replenish this species of trees as otherwise a day will come in when we will not have anything left for our future generations.
Due to its vast applications and its properties western red cedar is widely used and hence western red cedar suppliers should also look at conservation and afforestation ideas so that they don't fall short of supplies and don't run out of business. With the global warming on its peak this species can lend a helping hand in solving this global problem as well.
Since the longevity of this tree is again an advantage and literally maintenance free for rest of the life it will be a good replacement for other species in solving the global warming and cutting down on greenhouse emissions.
The quality of red cedar also changes with the location where it’s grown and there are quite a few varieties of red cedar available. Some of the varieties are limited to some coastal regions and don't grow anywhere else due to the favorable conditions available in these regions.
The best property that a red cedar possess is that its resistant to rot. Its grain is straight and has a pretty uniform texture. It’s a softwood and easy to manage and give shape. It also has an inbuilt resistance to termites, however some variants of termites may be able to attack it in-case of lack of naturally available other resources. So the need of the hour is to protect this species from extinction and extend full support to the organizations doing this job.
